ParklandOne - Password Update Instructions if you have a Parkland-Owned Laptop

"ParklandOne" refers to your digital credentials for the College. It encompasses your Parkland username, password, and multifactor authentication (MFA). ParklandOne account management is powered by a system called Okta. This article describes how best to update your password to ensure it doesn't cause syncing issues if you have a Parkland-owned laptop (this includes laptops borrowed from the library). This applies to voluntary password changes as well as forgotten password scenarios.

It is highly recommended that you follow these steps while connected to the Parkland network. If you are NOT connected to the Parkland network, your new password will NOT sync with your Parkland-owned laptop upon next login.

If you forgot your password:

  1. Utilize the "Forgot your password?" link within any ParklandOne login prompt while on-campus through any device that has remained connected and signed into the Parkland network, from a Parkland desktop that doesn't require login, or from a kiosk machine within the Tech Service Desk,or on the 2nd floor of the Student Union.
  2. Proceed with steps 1-4 in the following article: ParklandOne - Forgot Password.
  3. Make sure your Parkland laptop is connected to your docking station on campus and sign onto the machine with your updated credentials. If you are borrowing a laptop from the Parkland Library, you will need to bring it back to them in order to receive assistance with syncing your new password to the laptop.

IMPORTANT: If you reset your ParklandOne password offsite and have your Parkland-owned laptop with you, your new password will NOT sync to that machine until you have returned to campus and connected it to the docking station in your office (or sought help from the Parkland Library if you have a loaner laptop). Until then, you can sign into web-based Parkland systems such as my.parkland.edu on any personal device from any browser using your new password, but you will NOT be able to sign into your Parkland laptop until you reestablish a wired connection on campus.

If you know your existing password, but want change it:

  • Please see the bolded links below for detailed instructions on both Windows and Mac.It is best to perform a voluntary password change while on campus and connected to the Parkland network.
  • Caveats to these instructions are required if you are borrowing a Windows laptop from the Parkland Library. Be sure to read the highlighted section in each WIndows scenario if this applies to you.

Windows:

Parkland-owned laptop - Change password - On campus (Recommended)

Parkland-owned laptop - Change Password - Off campus (VPN Recommended - For Employees Only)

Parkland-owned laptop - Off campus - Changed password without connecting to VPN (Not Ideal)

Mac:

On a Parkland-owned Mac - Change password - On campus (Recommended)

On a Parkland-owned Mac - Change password - Off campus (VPN Required - For Employees Only)

On Windows:

A. If you are on a Parkland-owned laptop and are on campus - Windows:

IMPORTANT: If you are using a loaner laptop from the Parkland Library, you will not be able to connect it to a docking station. After you change your password, skip step 3 below. Instead, you will need to bring the laptop to the Parkland Library in order to receive assistance with syncing your new password to the machine.

  1. Make sure that your laptop is connected to the docking station in your office. It is optimal to close out of Parkland services (except login.parkland.edu) prior to changing your password.
  2. Proceed with steps 1-4 in the following article: ParklandOne - Change Password (if you know your existing password)
  3. Once your password is changed, sign out of your laptop and sign back in with your new password. The easiest way to do this is to lock your machine. Press the Windows key and the "L" key on your keyboard. Next, press any key on your keyboard and you will be presented with a password prompt. Enter your new ParklandOne password.

B. If you are on a Parkland-owned laptop and are off campus and are an employee - Windows:

IMPORTANT: If you are an employee using a loaner laptop from the Parkland Library, you will need to install GlobalProtect VPN through the Windows Software Center before proceeding with steps 1-4 below.

  1. Connect to the VPN first in order to eliminate password syncing: VPN Usage - Windows.
  2. It is optimal to close out of Parkland services (except VPN and login.parkland.edu) prior to changing your password.
  3. Proceed with steps 1-4 in the following article: ParklandOne - Change Password (if you know your existing password).

C. If you are on a Parkland-owned laptop, are off campus, and you change your password without connecting to the VPN (Not Ideal) - Windows:

  • Once you lock, reboot, or restart your machine after a password change, your laptop will not recognize your updated ParklandOne password until you reconnect to the Parkland network.
  • Until then, please use your previous ParklandOne password to sign onto the machine. All other applications (my.parkland.edu, Outlook, VPN, etc.) will require your new password.
  • To get your new password to sync to the laptop, connect to the VPN and follow the instructions in  Scenario B above -OR- return to campus and connect your laptop to the docking station in your office as outlined in Scenario A above. If you are using a loaner laptop from the Parkland Library, please be sure to note the highlighted caveats in sections A and B.

On a Mac:

A. If you are on a Parkland-owned Mac and are on campus - Mac:

After entering the new password to log in, you might be greeted with a prompt to update or create a new keychain. Select Update Keychain Password and enter the old password which was the keychain's password. After entering the old password, the keychain will update to now use the new password. If Create New Keychain is selected, the system will create a new keychain with the new password clearing anything in the old keychain (WiFi passwords, shared drive passwords, and any passwords saved on the machine).

The system will create a new keychain with your new, current password, clearing anything in the old keychain.

B. If you are on a Parkland-owned Mac and are off campus (VPN Required - For Employees Only) - Mac

  1. For this to work successfully with the least amount of trouble, be sure you’re connected to the VPN. If at any point during this process something doesn’t work right, start from the beginning and be sure again that you are connected to the VPN. VPN Usage - Mac

In the password field, type in the new password and press the enter key. This will update your password for logging into your account.

Disconnect from the VPN.

Connect to the VPN again and it should prompt you for your credentials. Please use your new password to verify that your new credentials are working correctly.

Restart the computer and log in with the new password. This login screen might look different.

After entering the new password to login, you might be greeted with a prompt to update or create a new keychain.

Your password should now be successfully changed. If you are experiencing any problems, please contact the Tech Service Desk at 217-353-3333.

Please be aware that if you log into another Mac on campus and get a prompt regarding your keychain needing unlocked, that means your account has been logged into this device in the past. Select Update Keychain Password and enter the old password that was used previously. If you do not remember this password, choose Create New Keychain.
