Creating modules and sub-modules in Content

You must create a module before you can add topics. You can create sub-modules (modules within existing modules) to establish a deeper hierarchy.

If you want to keep your course content hidden while you are building it, set the status of your modules and/or topics as Draft.

Note If your course is SCORM 2004-compliant, any new modules you create are outside the sequencing and navigation built into the SCORM package.

Create a new module

  1. On the Content page, enter your new module title in the Add a module... field, which is below the Table of Contents title and any existing modules.
  2. Press Enter or click outside the field to add the module.

Create a new sub-module

  1. Click on the module you want to add a sub-module to from the Table of Contents panel.
  2. Enter your new sub-module title in the Add a sub-module... field.
  3. Press Enter or click outside the field to add the sub-module.

Creating a new topic in Content

  1. Click on the module you want to create a new topic for from the Table of Contents panel.
  2. Select one of the options from the Upload/Create button.
  3. Fill in the required fields, such as topic Title, a URL link, Instructions, or select the appropriate files you want to add or upload.

Tip If you Create a File, you can choose to Browse for a Template. This enables you to work from an existing template and ensure consistency across topics. See [Link for document 47928 is unavailable at this time] for more information.

  4. Do one of the following:
    • If you are creating a new document, link, dropbox folder, discussion, or quiz, click Publish.
    • If you are adding files from My Computer, Course Offering Files, Shared Files, or (if available) OneDrive Files, click Add.
    • If you are adding a new video, click Save.
  5. You can continue to edit the new topic's additional details by:
    • Setting a completion tracking method. See [Link for document 48491 is unavailable at this time] for more information.
    • Adding a topic description.
    • Attaching supplementary files.
    • Modifying submission options (for example, number of attempts, number of submissions).  See Cobra Learning - Creating and Managing Dropbox for more information.
    • Changing topic status (for example, from Draft to Published).
    • Adding restrictions (for example, availability dates, due date, release conditions).
    • Adding a grade item.
    • Adding learning objectives.

Adding videos to course content

  1. Click Content on the navbar.
  2. Click on the module you want to add your video to from the Table of Contents panel.

Note When you add a video in Content, you automatically create a new topic within the module.

  3. Click Video from the Upload/Create button.
  4. In the Add Video dialog, do one of the following:
    • In the Web Video tab, Enter Url or Embed Code for the video you want to link to. Embedded videos should already be closed-captioned, but check your source to be sure.  You must also upload a captioning file to ensure accessibility.  See below.
    • In the Upload tab, drag and drop a video file from your computer on to the the upload target, or click Browse... to locate your video file.  HOWEVER, since we pay for the Cobra Learning space, it is our preference that you use the first option and embed your video instead of uploading it.

Note Your uploaded video files will play in the mediaelement.js video player. A list of the video file types this player supports can be found here: http://mediaelementjs.com/

  5. Click Preview if you are in the Web Video tab or click Play if you are in the Upload tab to ensure the video plays correctly and to check for any messages about browser support.
  6. Click Save.

Adding subtitles to your uploaded video

You must add subtitles to uploaded videos by uploading an SRT or WebVTT file.  NOTE:  Federal law requires that video content be closed captioned. You can also attach more than one subtitle file to a video to accommodate more than one language. This can make your video accessible to a broader audience. Subtitles appear to students as closed captions within the video player and they can decide if they want to view the video with subtitles enabled, as well as which of the available languages they want to use. Subtitles are not automatically generated for videos, and they are not automatically translated into different languages. If you want to include subtitles for web videos hosted on another site, such as YouTube, you must follow the practices of that site.

Add subtitles to your video

Notes
  • See SRT files for more information about SRT files.
  • The closed caption file uploads into a subfolder in the same location as the video file.
  1. After uploading your video in the Upload tab of the Add Video dialog, click Add Subtitles.

Note You can only add subtitles to the videos that you upload.

  2. Select the language of your subtitles from the Subtitle Language drop-down list.
  3. Click Browse... to locate and upload the SRT or WebVTT file containing your closed captions for the video.
  4. Click Done.
  5. Click Save.

SRT files

An SRT file is a .srt extension file that contains a formatted plain text list of timecodes (HH:MM:SS,MIL) matched with subtitles. Each item on the list is numbered sequentially starting with 1. You can create your own SRT file with a plain text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit, and save the file with extension .srt. The following is a .srt file example:
