Microsoft 365 (Outlook) - Phishing Attempts and Compromised Email Accounts

What to do if you believe your email account is compromised or if you receive a phishing message.

If you feel that you have received a suspicious email that you believe to be a phishing attempt, please use the following articles to ensure they are properly reported:

Students

Employees

If you have fallen victim to a phishing attempt and have provided personal information, please immediately do the following:

  1. Change your ParklandOne password at login.parkland.edu. If you have fallen victim to a phishing attempt, changing your password is the best way to keep your account secure. If you are not sure if you followed the phishing attempt's instructions, it is still best to change your password to prevent further issues with your account. If you use this password for any other accounts, just to be on the safe side you will want to change your password for those accounts as well.
  2. If you provided banking information, report this to the financial institution and/or the card issuer as quickly as possible. Check your other accounts and keep an close eye on them.
  3. If you provided social security information, contact the Social Security Administration's Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 to report the unauthorized use of your personal identification information
  4. Sometimes, a compromised email account will result in a rule being applied to the account. It is a good idea to also check your rules settings to make sure that there are no rules in place that you did not create. Please see the instructions for accessing the rules settings in your Parkland Outlook account below.

Outlook Client (desktop) Version:

1. Select File in the top left hand corner of the screen
2. Next, select Manage Rules and Alerts. This will show you all rules that are applied to your Parkland email account.
3. Find any rule(s) that may have been applied to your account and select Delete.

Outlook Web Version:

1. Go to Settings and select View all Outlook settings towards the bottom of the side pane that appears on the right.
2. Select Mail>Rules This will show you all rules that are applied to your Parkland email account.
3. Find the rule(s) that may have been applied to your account and select Discard.
