Office 365 (Outlook) - Sending Email Messages to Cell Phones (SMS Messaging)

Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems. It is a great way to send email messages to cell phones and it is possible to do this from the Outlook Client and Outlook Web Interface.

1. There are three things that you will need to know in order to send an email message to someone's cell phone which they will receive in the form of a text message, or SMS. 
  • The recipient's full phone number, including area code
  • Who their mobile carrier is - (If you are not sure, go to and type in the area code and phone number in the space provided and select Search by Number. FoneFinder will provide you with the name of the provider who services that number.)
  • Once you know who the cellular provider is, you will need to look up that provider's SMS format. Each cell phone network provider has its own format for sending email messages to wireless phones. 2. Once you have that information, you are ready to send your message.  This can be done from the Outlook Client or from the Outlook Web Interface.
  • Open up a new message and type in in the To: field as seen in the example below. Keep the message short as most carriers have limits on the number of characters that you can send.
