VPN Secure Access - Description, Installation, and Usage

What is a VPN? 

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a means for Parkland employees to securely connect to the Parkland network when not on campus.  Parkland utilizes a VPN client called VIA. 

Who is the VPN for?

The Parkland VPN is only available for Parkland employees and authorized contractors.  The VIA client can be installed on Windows and Mac workstations as well as most Android and iOS devices (smart phone, tablets, etc.).

What can I access once connected to Parkland using the VPN?

  • Colleague
  • Local Parkland Workstation (requires Remote Desktop Connection*)
    • You will have access to your mapped drives.
  • Parkland Network Drives
    • Parkland Device
      • Mapped drives will automatically connect
    • Non-Parkland Device
      • (requires Remote Desktop Connection*)

* For more information on Remote Desktop, please see Remote Desktop Connection (Windows) - How to Configure Your Office Computer for a Remote Desktop Connection . Remote Desktop CANNOT be configured at this time if your Parkland machine is a Mac.


Installation and Usage:

The VIA software can be installed on any Parkland owned or personal device but a VPN connection may only be established while not connected to the Parkland network.


Windows Install Instructions:

1. Download the software by visiting https://vpn.parkland.edu/via.

2. Log in using your ParklandOne account credentials.


3. The server will automatically detect the version of OS you're running and give you a download link for the proper version. Select the link to download a copy of the appropriate software.

4. It will bring up the following prompt and you will want to select Save File.

5. Select where you want to save the installer file to. In this example, it was saved to the Desktop.

6. Navigate to where you saved the ANSETUP.MSI installer and double click to run it. In this example, we saved it to the desktop, so we are able to run the installer by double-clicking on the following icon on the desktop. Alternatively, you can also access it in the downloads section of your browser.

7. Press Next.

8. Accept the license agreement terms and press Next.

9. Accept the defaults on the Destination Folder and press Next.

10. Select Install.

11. Say Yes to the User Account Control prompt (if applicable).

12. Press Finish.


13. When you install the client, it will ask for a Remote Server address. Use vpn.parkland.edu. Enter your ParklandOne username and password and then press Login.

14. The remote server selection screen will appear. Accept the default and press Login.

15. You will notice a small grey icon in the lower-right corner of the task bar.  This is the VIA icon. It will remain grey until it does some initial setup work. 


 
A. If you double click it and click the Diagnostics Tab you can watch the progress of the connection.


B. Once connected, the log will show "ISPEC Connection....Established" and the VIA taskbar icon will turn from all grey to green and gold taskbar icon .


C. You can press X to close the log window. You have now established a secure connection to the Parkland Network.

17. To disconnect, right-click on the green and gold VIA icon in the lower-right corner of the task bar and select Disconnect or Exit.


Windows Usage Instructions:


1. Start the VIA client from the Start Menu or the shortcut on the desktop viashortcut   . The application is called Virtual Intranet Access. When you launch the application, it will use your ParklandOne credentials that you supplied when you installed the software and established your first VPN connection. - OR - If you simply disconnected rather than exited from your last VPN session, simply right click on the grey VIA icon   in the lower-right section of the taskbar, select Connect, and skip down to step 5.

2. Once you have provided the connection details and clicked login, the remote server selection screen will appear. Accept the default and press Login.

3. You will notice a small grey icon in the lower-right corner of the taskbar.  This is the VIA icon. It will remain grey until it does some initial setup work.

4. Once connected, the VIA taskbar icon will turn from grey to green and gold .

6. When you are finished using the VPN connection that you have established, it is important to disconnect. You can do this by right-clicking on the green and gold VIA icon in the lower-right section of the taskbar and selecting Disconnect (or Exit).

NOTES:

  • If you need to re-establish your connection and the grey icon is still present in the system tray, you can right click on it and select connect.
  • If your ParklandOne username and/or password changes, please see VPN Secure Access - Username or Password Change .

Mac Install Instructions:

1. Download the software by visiting https://vpn.parkland.edu/via.

2. Log in using your ParklandOne account credentials.

4. When the download has finished, find and open the installer in your downloads folder or through your browser.

5. After opening the installer click Continue to verify that the software can be installed on your computer.

6. Click Continue again.

7. The installer will then display the license agreement.  Select Continue and then Agree to accept the license agreement.

8. Click Continue to accept the default install destination.

9. Select Install.  You may be prompted for your Mac credentials before you can proceed.

10. Once the installation has finished click Close.

11. When the client opens for the first time, it will ask you to set up your VPN profile.  Click inside the circle to download the VPN profile.

12. When asked for the VPN Server URL use vpn.parkland.edu.  Enter your ParklandOne username and password and press Download.  You may be prompted for your Mac credentials once more after this step.

13. Click inside the circle to connect.

14. The circle will turn green, indicating a successful connection.


15. When you are finished using the VPN connection that you have established, it is important to disconnect. To disconnect from the VPN, click inside the circle where it says, "Click To Disconnect".

Mac Usage Instructions:



1. Start the VIA (Virtual Intranet Access) client.  Typing "via" into the Finder will bring up the VIA application icon.


2. Click inside the circle to connect.

3. The circle will turn green, indicating a successful connection to the Parkland network. For additional information regarding your connection, click on the gear icon in the upper-right.

A. The Network tab allows you to view information including real-time data on your VPN traffic.

B. The Logs tab displays important information about your client's activity.

6. When you are finished using the VPN connection that you have established, it is important to disconnect. To disconnect from the VPN, click inside the circle where it says "Click to Disconnect".

7. You may also connect/disconnect using the VIA icon in the Menu Bar. While connected, the VIA icon will appear green. When disconnected, the icon will appear white.

Android Install and Usage Instructions:


1. Go to the Google Play store and search for Aruba VIA. When found, click the Install button.

2. Press the Accept button to allow the application to access the necessary resources.

3. Press the OPEN button on the screen after the application is installed.

4. Click the center button to create a VPN client profile.

5. In the server URL box, enter vpn.parkland.edu, and press the DOWNLOAD button.

6. Press the CONTINUE button to accept the certificate.

7. Enter your ParklandOne user name and password and press the PROCEED button.

8. You can then press the large center button to connect to Parkland.  You may receive a message to confirm your choice to connect to a trusted network by pressing OK.

9. When the center button has a green circle around it, you are connected.  Simply touch the button again to disconnect.
Note:  If you leave the VPN client screen, simply go to your application list and choose the ArubaVIA icon to bring the button back up.




iOS Install and Usage Instructions: 


1.  Open the App Store and search for Aruba VIA. Select GET, and approve the install.


2. Open the ArubaVIA application.


3. From the ArubaVIA home screen, select Tap to download VPN profile.

4. in the Server URL field, enter vpn.parkland.edu. Enter your ParklandOne username and password in the corresponding fields and select Download.

5. Accept the server verification if prompted.


6. Press the circle to connect to the parkland VPN.  While you are connected to Parkland's VPN, the center circle will turn green.

7. When you are done using the VPN, open the ArubaVIA application and press the green circle to disconnect.

Note: While connected, you will also see a VPN icon in your iOS notifications as shown below.

8. If you leave the VPN client screen, simply go to your applications and choose the ArubaVIA icon to bring the button back up.
