Cobra Learning - Using Zoom in Cobra

In the event that you need to conduct your class meeting time online, Zoom can be used to create a meeting to be held online.

Using Zoom in Cobra Learning

Creating a Zoom Account

If you already have a Zoom account, you can skip to the next section of this article.

If you do not have a Zoom account, go to and click the "Sign up, it's free" buton.

Sign up for Zoom

Use your Parkland email address to establish your account and click Sign up.

Enter your email address

You'll get a notice that an email has been sent to your address to confirm the sign up. If you do not receive it, click the resent another email link and/or confirm that your email address was entered correctly.

Email sent notice

Check your Parkland email account for the confirmation message and click the Activate Account button to be taken to Zoom for activation.

Activate your account

You'll be returned to Zoom where you will complete your account setup.

Enter name and password

This will then take you to a screen where you can Start a meeting right away or go to your account. You'll be assigned a personal meeting ID and URL for meetings.

NOTE:you cannot change this ID with a free account.

Start using Zoom

You are now ready to use Zoom for your class meetings!

Setting up a Zoom Meeting

In the upper right corner, click on the Schedule a Meeting link.

Schedule a meeting

Follow the following steps to establish your meeting criteria:

Steps to setting up your meeting
  1. Topic: Give your meeting a name, such as Class Meeting.
  2. When: Schedule your meeting date and time.
  3. Duration: Set your meeting duration.

NOTE:with the free account, you cannot schedule your meeting for longer than 40 minutes if there are 3 or more participants. Please consider using Skype or Virtual Classroom if you need longer.

  4. Recurring meeting: if you are scheduling an office hour or something that will happen more frequently, you can set them up in advance.
  5. Meeting ID: If you will be setting different meetings, then let the meeting ID generate automatically; otherwise, you can reuse your personal meeting ID on your rooms.

NOTE:you cannot change this ID with a free account.

  6. Video: You can set webcam access to on or off for the host (you) and the participants. We would recommend "off" for participants/students.
  7. Audio: If you set up Telephone or Both, it will generate a call-in number that participants can use from a phone. During increased demand on Zoom, a free account may not allow for the telephone option and may require participants to use computer audio. (See the notice at the top of the image).
  8. Meeting Options:
Enable join before host. Not recommended as this would allow participants/students to enter the room before you start the meeting.
Mute particpants upon entry. This would keep the audio a bit more controlled and require participants to use the chat feature instead of microphones.
Enable waiting room. This would allow participants in a room prior to the start of the meeting, rather than turning them away.
Record the meeting automatically on the local computer. Will create a video file for you to store on your computer and share after the meeting.

Click Save when done.

Adding your Zoom Meeting to Cobra

After you click Save when creating your meeting, you will get a confirmation along with the ability to add the meeting room to your calendar. You'll also see the join URL in this screen as well. Copy that link.

Give the link a title, like Class Meeting; and paste the copied address into the URL box. Then click Create.

Once the application is launched, you will get a prompt to test your speakers and microphone as well as join with computer audio.

Join with computer audio

You'll be entered into the room and will have access to all of the Zoom features, such as sharing your screen or presentation as well as a white board. If you selected to automatically record the meeting, you will see the recording note in the upper left of the screen.

Zoom Room

Once you end the meeting, your recording will automatically convert and be saved to your computer (in a folder under Documents called Zoom).

Saving the recording

Sharing Your Recording

After the recording has been saved, you can upload the MP4 file to TechSmith Relay and generate captions and then link it to your Cobra course for students to review later. To locate the MP4 file, go to Documents on your computer, click on Zoom, and then on the meeting folder that contains your meeting recording. This is also where the chat transcript will be stored as well.
