How to Transfer Files to a Network Drive (Windows)

The H: drive is a network drive that is available to all Parkland employees from any Parkland computer (so long as you are signed in as yourself and are connected to the Parkland network on campus or through VPN).  The intended use is for storing personal work-related files.  Each user has 10GB of space dedicated for their use. The H: drive should be your go-to document storage location moving forward (as opposed to your local computer/C: Drive) because files are backed up nightly and are therefore not susceptible to viruses or ransomware. Please note that only you will have access to the files on your H:drive and shared documents should be saved to the N: Drive instead. To access the H: or N: Drives and transfer files to/from them, please follow these steps. Note: in the example below, we are transferring files to the H: drive but the same instructions would apply when transferring to the N: Drive.

1.) In Windows 10, type in PC in the search field and select This PC.

2.) You should see at least two drives, the C: Drive, and the H: Drive. (You may have other drives available to you such as the N: Drive). The C: Drive is where all of your desktop files and Documents/Pictures/Video/etc. folders are stored locally and you will see those local folders in the section at the top.

3.) Go to the folder that contains the files you want to transfer (Documents, Music, Pictures, Desktop, etc), double click on it, and locate your file. You now have several options for how to handle the file. You can either (A) copy the file over to H: or (B) move the file over. If copied, the file will be saved to the local C: Drive as well as to the Parkland H: drive. If moved, it will be removed from the local C: Drive and will be saved to the Parkland H: Drive instead.

(A) Copy a file to H: There are a couple of ways to copy a file. You can either left click on it and drag it to the H: Drive located in the left column (as pictured below) -OR- right click on the file and select Send to>H:
Note: To copy a large grouping of files to H:, select the first file, press and hold the Shift button on your keyboard and use the arrow keys to add additional files to your selection. Once you are happy with your selection, release the buttons on your keyboard (to copy all of the files in your folder over to H:, press the Ctrl and A buttons on your keyboard at the same time and then release). Next, You can either left click on any one of the highlighted files and drag it to the H: Drive -OR- right click on the file and select Send to>H: Either way, it will copy over all of the files that you highlighted as a group.

(B) Move a file to H: Please Right click on the file and drag it to to the H: Drive located in the left column (as pictured below). Once you release the mouse, you will be presented with a prompt. Select Move here from the list of options. Note: To move a large grouping of files to H:, select the first file, press and hold the Shift button on your keyboard and use the arrow keys to add additional files to your selection. Once you are happy with your selection, release the buttons on your keyboard (to move all of the files in your folder over to H:, press the Ctrl and A buttons on your keyboard at the same time and then release). Next, right click on any one of the highlighted files and drag it to the H: Drive. Once you release the mouse, you will be presented with a prompt.
