Cobra Learning - Creating and Managing Navbars
Creating a navbar
- You cannot add all tools and functionality to a navbar. Some tools are only accessible in widgets and on the minibar.
- Since the minibar contains links to My Home, courses, Email, and user settings, the links on your navbar should primarily be tools participants need to complete course work.
Create a navbar
- On the Navbars page, click Create Navbar.
- Enter a Name and Description for your navbar.
- Click Add Links in a link area to add existing links and link groups to a navbar. Select the check boxes beside the links you want to add and click Add. Click and drag a link to move it to a different link area or reorder it within the same link area.
- Click Create Custom Link in a link area if you want to create and add a custom link to the area. Complete the Create Custom Link form and click Create.
Note The list of links available depends on the tools your organization uses, the custom links and link groups available, and the tools enabled for your course.
- You may change the title displayed on your navigation bar. By default, it will be the org unit name, but you can select custom and type the name that will appear on the navigation bar. NOTE: it does not change the name of the course on the My Courses widget.
- Click Save and Close.

On the Navbars page, click Copy from the context menu of the navbar you want to copy. NOTE: we recommend this as the quickest way to customize a navbar.
Edit a navbar
- On the Navbars page, click on the navbar you want to edit. NOTE: you may only edit navbars that you have access to edit. System default navbars may only be edited by site administrators. You may copy a system navbar and edit it, though. (See Copy an existing navbar above).

Reorder links
- On the Navbars page, click on the navbar you want to reorder links for.
- In the Links section, click and drag the link you want to its new position. You can also click and drag a link to a different link area. Do this for each link you want to reorder.
- Click Save and Close.
Show or hide a link's text or icon
- On the Navbars page, click on the navbar you want to modify links for.
- Click on the link you want to modify.
- In the link's Properties, choose Custom Style.
- Select how you want the link to appear from the Custom Style drop-down list.
- Click Hide Properties to continue modifying other links.
- When finished, click Save and Close.
Rename a link area
By default, the link areas in a navbar are called the Top Left Link Area, Top Right Link Area, Bottom Left Link Area, and Bottom Right Link Area. You can rename these link areas with your own headings to provide users with a better sense of navigation. For example, screen reader users can orient themselves to a navbar more quickly if headings effectively communicate the type of tools found in each link area.
- On the Navbars page, click on the navbar you want to rename a link area for.
- Click on the link area you want to rename.
- In the link area's Properties, select the check box beneath Rename Link Area and enter a new name in the text field.
- Click Hide Properties to continue modifying other link areas' names.
- When finished, click Save and Close.
Preview a navbar
- On the Navbars page, click Preview from the context menu of the navbar you want to preview.
- Click Close to return to the Navbars page.
Delete a navbar
On the Navbars page, click Delete from the context menu of the navbar you want to delete. You cannot delete an Active navbar or a Default navbar, and you can only delete a navbar from the org unit (or organization) in which it was created.
Important If you delete a navbar that is shared to child org units, all child org units using the navbar will automatically revert to the Default navbar.
