Business Intelligence - CROA Reports Design Process

The CROA launch site can be found at

1. An Overview to the Reports Design:

The Business Objects reporting is focused on distributing information around the organization. These are typically business questions that can be anticipated ahead of time, with a report or universe prepared by a business user or IT developer that addresses these questions.
There are 2 solutions in this category:
SAP Crystal Reports
SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence

SAP Crystal Reports is oriented more towards highly formatted production reporting. It uses a desktop client to design the report which can then be consumed over the web.
SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence is optimized for self-service report creation and modification. You can design reports over the web.

2. Report Design Process:

We have distributed the report designing approach to two categories across Parkland.
1.)   Self-Service
2.)   Assisted Report Designing (which may include crystal or complex webi reports)

2.1 Self-Service:
Report writers can create their own reports using sample reports or using the report templates specific to Parkland.

Sample reports and report templates are available under Public Folders\ Colleague Sample Reports 2.0 on Business Objects Launchpad.
These sample reports and templates are pointing to relevant universes of the specific domains.

Steps to create a report using templates or enhancing/modifying an existing sample report.
1.   Report writers can either use/modify a sample report or can create their own reports from scratch using the report templates. In order to modify the sample reports or templates they must copy the sample
report/template to their favorites. No user can edit the sample reports or templates directly.
2.   When report is created/enhanced/modified to your satisfaction, copy the report to test folder.
3.   Get the report reviewed, verified in terms of data and approved from appropriate person (may belong to specific department, IAR or IT).
4.   Publish the report to appropriate Parkland folder.
5.   Schedule the report if required.

** This kind of report designing method is based on the assumption that you can see all your required data objects in the universe. If you don’t see an object/field you require in your report please follow the next approach illustrated below.

2.2 Assisted report designing:

There can be two ways IT can assist you with report design.
1.    By updating the database and creating the required universe objects for you.
2.    Or if, the report is too complex or requires data from production tables then IT can write a crystal or webi report for you.

Steps to request assistance for report designing.

Approach 1: Database or Universe update.

1.    Create a work request (If you need help please approach IT).
2.    IT will work with you to fill out report request form.
3.    IT will do the database/universe update and make your data objects available for your reporting.
4.    Develop the report in your favorites and follow the self-service approach of writing your own report.
5.    Publish the report to appropriate Parkland folder.
6.    Schedule the report if required.

Approach 2: Report Development by IT.
1.    Create a work request (If you need help please approach IT).
2.    IT will be in touch with you and figure out if the report has to be crystal or webi (Depending on data requirement).
3.    IT will work with you to fill out report request form and attach it to the work request.
4.    IT develops the report, test it and publish it to Parkland specific folder for you.
